History of St. Anne's

St Anne's has been taking the initiative in the field of community care and support for well over thirty years. Our journey started in 1971 when the lack of a daytime refuge for the homeless people in Leeds stirred a small band of volunteer workers into action.  Using available space behind Leeds Cathedral (St Anne's Cathedral - hence the organisation's name) they create a Day Centre offering food and 'a friendly atmosphere' where homeless men could come and go freely without pressure.

From those small beginnings St Anne's skills and experience has grown dramatically. We now work with people who are or have been homeless, people who have problems related to substance misuse - drugs and/or alcohol, people who experience mental health problems or who have a learning disability.

In recent times St Anne's has been busy developing a range of services in Yorkshire and the North East. Supported Living services for people with a wide range of learning disabilities have been developed in partnership with other housing providers in Leeds, and several areas in the North East (including Middlesbrough, Durham, Sunderland, North and South Tyneside). These include specialist services for people with a profound learning disability which have been developed in Sunderland and Tyneside.

In Leeds, a residential mental health service has been successfully re-profiled to supported living. In South Yorkshire, our hostel for single homeless men in Sheffield has undergone a major redevelopment and further developments are being planned.
