Learning disability, mental health and homeless services in Kirklees

In 1993, after a number of years of detailed planning, Huddersfield Health Authority transferred eight nursing homes and a day centre to St. Anne's. Dewsbury Health Authority also transferred two nursing homes to us at that time. Since then, there have been a considerable development of St. Anne's services in the Kirklees area.

For people with learning disabilities, residential care and nursing services are available in :

  • Batley
  • Birstall
  • Dewsbury
  • Huddersfield

In addition to supported living services, a respite care service, Shady Trees, and a day care service, at Oxfield Court, are also available in the Huddersfield area.

For people with mental health problems, St Anne's range of services includes residential care, supported living, a volunteer befriending scheme and a volunteer carer's break service. These services are available in :

  • Dewsbury
  • Huddersfield

The volunteer befriending scheme works across the Dewsbury area, but the carers' respite service which supports the carers of people with mental health problems is available across the whole of Kirklees.

The supported housing service is available in Dewsbury in a mixture of flats, flat-lets and shared accommodation. Tenants in St. Anne's accommodation hold single assured short-hold tenancies. Each tenant has an allocated number of support hours determined by their individual support plans and risk assessments. The aim of the service is to enable people to increase their independence and to encourage move-on to independent living. People wishing to access the service will initially undergo an assessment of their needs and risks. A support plan is then agreed and delivered in partnership with other agencies in the area.
