Astbury in Middlesbrough were nominated for a Top Team award by their Area Manager Edita Paliulionyte.

They were nominated because the team has consistently shown exceptionally high quality of care following internal and external audits.

Astbury received all GOOD from CQC during their inspection on 3rd and 10th May 2017. The report stated that throughout the inspection there was evidence of support being delivered to people in a kind and caring way. Relatives spoke positively about the support people received, and described staff as caring. Staff had a good knowledge of people and were able to communicate effectively with them. People were encouraged to be as independent as possible and were treated with dignity and respect. Staff spoke positively about the culture and values of the service and said they were proud of where they worked. Astbury also had a recent contract inspection from the Local Authority. It was a very detailed inspection.

Astbury also had a recent Quality and Safety audit. It was rated Outstanding in two areas (the Service and Client Holidays). Also, the Quality & Safety team informed the Area Manager and FLM that had there not unfortunately been the one action in the support planning section, Astbury would have got a resounding outstanding for that section as well – some of the best support plans the Quality and Safety auditor had seen.

Astbury also had a recent compliment from a relative. This was about the excellent care his brother received at Astbury during a recent period of ill health. Staff at Astbury listened to the relatives views and care was provided to the Client in his home environment by staff who knew him well. The hospital admission, considering the complexity of Stephen’s needs, would have been very stressful to all.

Lastly, Astbury was approached by the government deceased estates department, regarding a client, who sadly passed away last year. The Client had no known relatives whilst she was still alive. However, the estates department managed to locate her step brother in July 2017. The deputy Manager wrote a lovely moving letter to the brother about his late sister’s life. Other staff who knew the Client contributed as well..’’ The manager deputy and the team provided the step brother with some photographs of the Client.

Since this the step brother has contacted Astbury and although he lives 400 miles away he is planning to come and visit Astbury and visit his late relatives grave to put some flowers on.

I agreed with the Area Managers nomination that the staff team at Astbury have gone the extra mile to ensure they meet all the complex requirements of internal and external inspections and excelled in providing high quality care. They have also taken time to liaise with the long lost brother of a Client who has passed away last year.

I was pleased to present the award to the team pictured and thanked them for their achievements.
