    Sponsorship Scheme

Our sponsorship scheme provides the opportunity for staff to apply to undertake professional qualifications and other external courses with financial and study support provided.

Our mentoring and development approach includes:

    • Providing opportunities for learning clinical skills, encouraging trainees to work on shifts when things such as PEG changes are happening, or tracheostomy changes.
    • Encouraging colleagues to work across different sites to see a variety of clinical skills that we have including; enteral feeding, support with nutrition and hydration, tracheostomy care, tissue viability, nebulisers, medication management, epilepsy management, supporting with moving and handling, wound management.
    • Training is supported by daily planning, as we highlight what is going on during the day and what will be good learning experiences. Any appointments or meetings that will benefit those receiving mentoring are also highlighted.
    • Students are involved in paperwork such as support planning, risk assessing, capacity assessments and best interest meetings. When new admissions come through we also involve students (where appropriate) to enable them to gain  practical experience.

We are proud to work with students to find out what they need, to develop their experience, and nurture them on their placement, providing them with  skills for their future.

    • We encourage them to work alongside the support workers to learn more about each of the clients

Mentoring newly qualified nurses is similar

    • Finding out what experience they already have from placements and what they feel they will need the most support with.
    • Supernumerary time on shifts so they can learn any clinical skills they need to prior to being in the numbers, supporting them for longer if needed.
    • Exploring options for training that they may need and sharing resources for knowledge development.

    Our Social Work and Criminology internships;

    • We have long standing connections with University of Leeds and Leeds Becket University, and have been hosting student placements for 15 years. Service providers undertake an educational audit with the Universities ensuring that our service is able to provide a supportive and safe placement which helps students meet appropriate learning outcomes.
    • Each service will hold an informal meeting with prospective student placements to make sure that the student and the service are happy and prepared.
    • Services that run student placements will have a qualified Practice Educator to provide supervision to the student. Where a service does not have an in-house Practice Educator, the University placement team will provide an external one. In this case the service will have a Workplace Supervisor to provide day-to-day supervision for the student.
    • The placements are typically for 2nd Year MA or BSC students and the typical duration is 70 days. With services taking between 1-4 students a year depending on the service. Service managers will discuss goals of the placement with the student so that they can get the most out of the program.
    • Student Outcomes:
      • Hands on client experience, including (where appropriate) sitting in professional meetings
      • Confidence when working with clients, including leading their own client group sessions and working with clients on their support plans
      • Experience working in a dynamic and fast-paced team
      • Practical subject knowledge in their field

      Service Outcomes

      • Additional resource in the service
      • Mentoring allows staff the opportunity to evaluate what they do and why
      • Encourage staff – it is very encouraging for the staff teams to see students develop during their placement
