The staff worked together planning, decorating, painting and creating items for the sensory garden, staff took into account the clients individual needs ensuring it was safe and usable.
Staff had approached me back in September 2018 to discuss the possibility of making one of the client’s gardens into a sensory garden.
When I returned to the service from a secondment I was overwhelmed at what I saw, I have never seen anything like it and the whole garden tells a story.
The clients who live at this property, never used the garden, it was dark, overshadowed by trees and badly painted fences, the staff at the service have told me how the clients were involved in the planning and preparation and spent time outside helping staff create the various items for the garden. All of the items used are from recyclable materials which have been kindly donated or sourced from the staff team.
The clients at this property never used to go out into the back garden but now they frequently use it with the staff support. There is comfortable seating areas and the small drab looking summer house has been transformed to provide a comfortable seating den.
I have never seen such enthusiasm and teamwork and the delight from the staff when they were so proud to show me the end product. This to me has shown fantastic commitment and dedication from the staff and the hard work that went into making something so wonderful for the clients to enjoy, this really does show that the staff ensure the clients are at the centre of everything they do.
The garden is work in progress and will be fully finished early summer, we hope to invite, carers and housing provider to come and have a look at the new garden. I feel that it is evidence of the fantastic teamwork that has been achieved by the staff team, pulling together to make a beautiful tranquil environment for the clients they support.
