Supported Living in Hull – Celebrating our latest development

Supported Living in Hull continues to evolve, and at St Anne’s we are proud to play a key role in shaping what that future looks like.

Our newest development, created in partnership with Hull City Council and Henley Investment Management, marks another step forward in giving people more independence and more connection to the communities they know best.

This new Supported Living service brings six modern, self-contained apartments into a vibrant part of the city, close to Hessle Road’s long stretch of shops, cafés, green grocers, community centres and everyday essentials.

It demonstrates what supported living in Hull can offer when organisations work together with the same shared purpose – creating homes where people can build their own day to day lives, with the right support around them.

What is supported living?

Supported living is all about enabling people to live in their own homes while receiving the level of support that fits around their lives. For many individuals with mental health needs or learning disabilities, it means having the freedom of their own space.

But even more importantly, their own front door, a living room, a kitchen, a bedroom, a bathroom, with support workers nearby who can help when needed.

Supported living is a step towards independence. It’s a dignified approach to care that gives people more choice, more control than residential care, giving them the confidence to shape their own lives.

Supported living in Hull has grown significantly over recent years, driven by a recognition that people thrive when they can keep hold of their community connections. Whether that’s the familiar walk to the local shop, a friendly chat with a neighbour, or being close to the places that make up the routines of everyday life.

How this service came to life

This new development was brought to life through close partnership between St Anne’s, Hull City Council Commissioners and Henley Investment Management. Each partner brought something essential:

  • St Anne’s brought decades of expertise in delivering high quality supported living services across the north of England.
  • Hull City Council provided vision, investment and strategic support, recognising the growing need for specialist supported living in the city.
  • Henley Investment Company ensured the redevelopment met modern standards while keeping the property rooted in its community setting.

Why supported living matters in Hull

Hull, like many cities, faces a significant shortage of specialist housing. Demand has risen sharply, and the waiting list continues to grow. The council has highlighted again and again how essential it is to create more supported living options, especially those tailored to mental health needs and learning disabilities.

All apartments were taken up, even before the doors officially opened, showing the scale of demand and the urgency behind providing more supported living choices in Hull.

Homes designed around real lives

Each apartment we created is fully self-contained, giving residents the privacy, comfort and autonomy of their own home. But what makes the development meaningful isn’t just the bricks, fittings or fresh paintwork – it’s the St Anne’s Support Workers who will bring the service to life.

The colleagues working here day in, day out will shape how this place feels. Their steady support, their consistent presence, their ability to help people feel settled and confident – is what creates the kind of environment where independence can grow.

And this area of Hull offers exactly the right surroundings. Just moments away from Hessle Road’s energetic high street, residents can access everything they need without feeling cut off.

Cinemas, supermarkets, cafés, green grocers, party shops, clothes shops, community venues – all within walking distance.

It’s the kind of neighbourhood where you can pick up what you need from the market, bump into a friendly face at the library, and feel grounded by the familiar streets and landmarks you’ve known for years.

Why community and location matters

Placing supported living developments in the heart of thriving areas makes a real difference. When properties are refurbished and refreshed on ordinary residential streets, people are supported to live where life already happens – not pushed out to the edges.

This approach strengthens neighbourhoods, revitalises streets, and keeps communities mixed, vibrant and inclusive. It also ensures services like small businesses, cafés and local shops continue to flourish because the people who rely on them are still right there. In many ways, supported living in Hull is helping sustain the very fabric of the city.

Looking ahead to the future

This service is just one part of a wider vision for supported living in Hull. As demand continues to rise, partnership driven developments like this will play a vital role in shaping how the city supports its residents.

At St Anne’s, we’re proud to be part of that. Creating homes that combine independence, connection and support, right at the heart of the communities people call home.
